Competency-Based Performance Management
HumanR's Federal Contractor employee survey data clearly shows that meaningful, constructive performance feedback is a major driver of engagement and retention. Nevertheless, in many organizations the performance review process is viewed as both an interruption and a make-work exercise, with little variance in employee ratings.
HumanR designs performance feedback processes and tools to support organizations in providing meaningful feedback on both the "what" and the "how" of getting important work done.
- Our competency studies help organizations identify and communicate what it takes to be successful.
- By specifying the behaviors associated with each competency, we help organizations set expectations. We define the behaviors at three performance levels - Outstanding, Solid, and Low, which supports managers in differentiating performance and providing specific, meaningful feedback.
- We provide frameworks and tools for establishing measureable business and professional development goals.
Career Development Programs
Opportunities for career development are another key influencer of employee engagement and retention. HumanR's approach to building career development programs is to define and communicate the skills and competencies required:
- to progress within a particular job family or set of job families as a technical expert or a people leader, or
- to make a lateral move to a new job family.
Related positions are grouped into career paths (e.g., Contracts, Systems Engineering). Within each career path, positions are arrayed into levels - for example, Entry-Level, Mid-Level, Senior-Level. The skills, education, experience, and competencies required at each level are defined by drawing on existing documentation and conducting focus groups with subject matter experts.
The result is a clear picture of what's required to progress within the organization. This information is organized into a Career Toolkit, which employees and managers use to assess the employee's developmental level, discuss career aspirations, and identify developmental resources and activities.
