“When you've been around as long as I have, you've seen a lot of surveys, and this is the best I've seen in terms of providing actionable, useful information. It's also been invaluable to see how we measure up against other Federal contractors.”

President, Professional Services Company

The Challenge

Organizations that provide professional services to the Federal government have unique human capital challenges. Many of their employees are highly skilled, require security clearances, and are in high demand. In addition, many work at client sites, are driven by the mission of the government agency for which they work, and have limited opportunities for exposure to the company's culture.

What Sets HumanR Apart

HumanR has launched a ground-breaking research service to improve the amount and quality of data available to the Federal contracting community on issues of employee engagement and retention.

Benchmarking Employee Turnover

HumanR produces a quarterly study of employee turnover among Federal contractors. For the most recent quarter, 31 companies participated. To ensure "apples to apples" comparison, we provide companies with a format for reporting their raw data. We then report back to participants on turnover rates and trends.

The substantial reports include turnover by a variety of demographic variables, such as geography and company size.

Benchmarking Employee Engagement

Over the past year, HumanR has surveyed 13,000 employees in 48 divisions of 12 Federal contractors, producing the first collection of normative data designed to exclusively meet the needs of this community.

Using the employee survey responses, we have constructed and validated an Employee Engagement Index. This Index provides insights into the behaviors that produce engaged employees and provides guidance on the interventions that influence engagement. The Index shows participating organizations the percentage of their employees that are Highly Engaged, Engaged, and Disengaged - and how their percentages compare with the norms for all companies.

In addition, the Index is used as another variable for analysis, providing insights into how employees' perceptions vary as a function of their engagement level. This level of analysis enables companies to tailor their initiatives to impact engagement (e.g., to move "Engaged" employees to "Highly Engaged").

Benchmarking Leadership Perspectives

Interviews have been conducted with the operating and human resource executives of each company participating in our employee survey to get their input on:

  • their ability to influence engagement and performance,
  • their ability to influence turnover, and
  • the steps they are taking to engage employees.

A summary of the interview data is provided to participating companies.

Annual Conference

HumanR sponsors an annual conference in the first quarter of each year. Attendance is free to companies participating in our Federal Contractor Benchmarking initiatives.

The conference focuses on best practices in employee engagement and provides participants with an opportunity to help set HumanR's research agenda for the coming year.
